Although the technology has been around for a few decades now 3D has only really picked up mass appeal in the last few years with box office Hollywood blockbusters like Avatar. The increasing popularity of 3D cinema has led many manufacturers of electronics to produce 3D televisions so that people can enjoy the experience in their own home, and even Nintendo has got in on the action with their latest Nintendo 3DS.

Now 3D is coming to the world of smartphones with two devices launched by two of Asia's leading phone manufacturers. Korean giant LG will be the first with their Optimus 3D although shortly after that the popular Taiwanese company HTC will also bring out their own 3D smartphone in the form of the EVO 3D. Although there are obviously differences in the hardware and software specifications of the two phones they both operate on the same 3D technology.

This technology is known as a parallax barrier display and is the same design employed by Nintendo in their 3DS. The screen works by partially blocking parts of the screen at certain viewing angles, so that the images seen by each eye do not match up. This provides a 3D effect that is essentially an optical illusion but nonetheless comes with the benefit that no 3D glasses are needed to enjoy it.

There is one downside to this technology in the fact that due to the way the parallax design works you must view the screen at certain angles to get the desired effect. While this is simple enough to achieve it may prove tiresome for long periods of time and so watching things like full 3D movies may be frustrating for many people.

Out of the two handsets the EVO 3D undoubtedly has a better screen. The higher res qHD EVO screen offers finer detail to the Optimus 3D's WVGA, and also comes with superior Super LCD technology compared to the LG device's standard LCD. While the Optimus handsets screen is of exceptional quality the HTC phone goes just that little bit further to make itself stand out.

Both smartphones are dual core as well but, while the Optimus comes with a dual core 1GHz processor the EVO runs on a slightly faster 1.2GHz CPU. While the EVO 3D ships with Android Gingerbread as its OS the Optimus will have to wait for an update to make use of the latest Android, instead shipping with Android Froyo. Both phones come with proprietary interfaces with the Optimus making use of the LG 3D UI and the EVO coming with HTC's trusty Sense UI.

Both phones also allow you to produce your own 3D material through fairly similar dual 5 megapixel cameras. 3D video is available at 720p or higher quality 1080p 2D videos, and both phones also allow you to capture stereoscopic or standard 2D images.

Both phones also feature many of the same great features you would find on any other high end Android smartphone including excellent multimedia support, fantastic web browsing and great connectivity through 3G and Wi-Fi. They also provide email, instant messaging, threaded SMS and social networking support. The Optimus 3D will see release in the UK first and for many people eager to get in on the latest craze this will be an ideal handset to go for. If you can wait a little while longer however it may be worth taking a look at the EVO 3D as in many areas of its functionality it goes that little bit further than its LG counterpart.
