In recent years we have seen an explosion in the popularity of 3D within the world of cinema with this phenomenon crossing over into home electronics such as televisions. This craze is even making its way into the world of handheld electronics with the likes of the Nintendo 3DS and now, for the first time, a 3D smartphone in the form of the LG Optimus 3D.
This phone operates on the same parallax barrier display technology found on the Nintendo console that differs somewhat from the system in use in cinemas. The parallax design means that light from the screen is blocked at certain viewing angles so that each eye receives a slightly different image, and this manipulates the brains parallax depth perception to produce the illusion of 3D.
The benefit of this is that you do not need to wear glasses as is the case in 3D cinemas. On the down side, if you move your head or the phone into a slightly inappropriate position then the entire 3D effect is lost. This could prove frustrating for some more fidgety types but is the current limitations of 3D handheld technology.
The Optimus 3D shows off all of this 3D wizardry through a gorgeous 4.3" LCD screen. This provides a high degree of visual quality for 2D content as well, and also comes with multitouch support and a gyro sensor for 3 dimensional controls. This gyro sensor can be used with many of the amazing games and apps that are on offer from Android Market.
The Optimus 3D runs on Android Froyo and can be updated to Android Gingerbread at a later date. This is combined with LG's 3D interface that is extremely easy to use and comes with great social networking support. It also supports threaded SMS and email along with various instant messaging clients.
The Optimus 3D provides lots of entertainment value besides its 3D content. It comes with good support for 2D video and music, and also supports online video content from websites like YouTube. There is also a stereo FM radio and access to Android Market on offer.
The Optimus 3D comes with excellent connectivity with support for 3G and Wi-Fi allowing you web access whenever you need it. The Wi-Fi connection comes with DLNA support so that you can hook the Optimus up to your home TV to enjoy visual content on a larger screen. If you own a 3D television this also includes the streaming of 3D content.
The Optimus 3D also comes with dual 5 megapixel cameras that can be used to capture stereoscopic images and record 720p 3D videos as well as 1080p 2D videos. 1080p is a feature not yet found on most smartphone cameras and is making one of its first appearances here. This is certainly one of the best cameras found on any smartphone and should be of particular interest to any budding home movie makers.
